Promoting Religious Pluralism and Fighting Extremism

NIF works to secure freedom of and from religion, as part of a vision of a just and democratic Israel. We fight for religious tolerance, for gender equality, and against the ultra-Orthodox monopoly on religious life.

The lack of freedom of and from religion remains one of the core obstacles to strengthening Israel’s liberal democracy, and enables disadvantage, particularly for women and Jews who are secular, Reform or Conservative.

Our vision is that, having finally achieved a Jewish homeland in Israel, Jews could practice their religion – or not – untroubled by government interference and without experiencing discrimination.

Projects we support:

Israel Religious Action Centre (IRAC)

IRAC is the leading organisation addressing religion and state issues in Israel. Its impact has been felt across a wide range of issues: ending the segregation of women on flights, buses and at funerals; the status of non-Orthodox streams of Judaism; and the right of the LGBT community to adopt.

IRAC’s commitment to advancing religious diversity and defending freedom of religion in Israel is all the more important because of the dominant role the Orthodox-controlled Rabbinate has across society.

NIF Australia funds projects which assist olim who face questions over their status as Jews, take action to advance gender equality, including airlines which discriminate against women on flights, and fight for public transportation on Shabbat.

Funds listed here include grants to IRAC's Racism Crisis Centre.
