Demanding international condemnation of gender-based violence

NIF grantee, the Israel Women’s Network (IWN), has been one of the leading organisations in demanding international condemnation of the gender-based and sexual violence perpetrated by Hamas on October 7. Due to the work of IWN and others, on December 1 UN Women condemned the violence for the first time.

On December 6 the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights followed suit. The organisation has continued to draw international attention Hamas’ gender-based violence, and IWN’s representatives were part of a delegation of Israeli women’s organisations who took part in a recent discussion on sexual violence at the UN.

NIF grantee Physicians for Human Rights Israel (PHRI) has also contributed to this space through publishing an extensive report on Hamas’ use of gender-based violence as a weapon of war. That report has provided data for a growing international conversation about sexual violence on October 7, with articles in Haaretz, The New York Times, The New Yorker, and elsewhere.
