NIF Australia Welcomes Government’s Support for Ceasefire and Regional Stability
22/7/2025 – Melbourne
The New Israel Fund Australia (NIF Australia) commends the Australian Government for its joint statement calling attention to the catastrophic humanitarian situation in Gaza, urging for an immediate ceasefire and the unconditional release of all hostages.
We are heartened to see the Australian Government reiterate that the protection of civilians is not just a moral imperative but a requirement under international humanitarian law. We share the government’s unequivocal condemnation of Hamas for its brutal attack on October 7 and reiterate that Palestinian civilians must not be made to pay the price for defeating Hamas. The conflict to-date has had an unacceptable toll on civilian life and many defence and security experts in Israel have stated that there is no longer a military justification to continue this war.
NIF Australia reiterates our support for a two-state solution where Israelis and Palestinians live securely within internationally recognised borders, and oppose any moves by the Israeli government that would make this resolution more difficult. This reality can only be brought about by a ceasefire, resumption of aid, hostage deal, and a peace process that recognises a free and independent Palestinian state alongside the state of Israel.
NIF is a leading not for profit dedicated to building a peaceful future based on equality, dignity and justice for all Israelis and Palestinians living in the Occupied Palestinian Territories. By funding civil society organisations on the ground, we are strengthening communities as well as advocating for political solutions to the conflict, like those championed by this statement.
Exemplifying our values and work, NIF recently awarded Adi Argov with its highest award, the ‘Truth to Power’ prize. Adi is an Israeli activist who has made it her mission since 2020 to bring images of innocent civilians suffering in Gaza to mainstream Israeli audiences. Despite immense personal risk, Adi is a testament to the voices of peace and humanity that are growing louder everyday both in Israel and the diaspora.
