NIF Statement in Response to the Attack at Bondi

The New Israel Fund Australia is horrified and broken by yesterday’s act of vile antisemitism and terrorism against our community. The horrific loss of life and the widespread trauma experienced by all who were there will be carried for many years to come. Celebrating the first night of Chanukah - a holiday that is about the right of Jews to live and celebrate their religion openly and safely - has brought to this ‘night of light’ a depth of darkness not known to us in Australia.

We know this horrific event does not represent Australia today. This vile act of terror by a few will not stop those who believe in community harmony and freedom of expression of religion and cultural heritage.

NIF Australia was formed in 2011 with the visit of then-president of NIF Israel, and the former deputy speaker of the Knesset, Naomi Chazan. In the more than ten years since its formation, NIF Australia has raised millions of dollars, distributing grants to important civil society organisations in Israel, and facilitating new conversations about Israel inside the Australian Jewish community.
