Today, Israelis face real threats to their civil rights and the just society we’re working so hard to build. For this reason, the New Israel Fund’s work now is not only important, but vital. At this moment, NIF stands to be the guiding light that will defend Israel’s democracy.

NIF was built for moments like this.

We come to the challenge prepared – with more than 40 years experience on the ground, and relationships right across civil society – and will remain a constant and steadying voice for democracy, equality and justice into the future.

Here are just a few of things we’ve been working on – and will be boosting our investments in – to protect and promote equality for everyone living under Israeli control.

Our grantees, the Association for Civil Rights in Israel (ACRI) and Palestinian-led organisation Adalah (‘Justice’), have a strong track record taking discriminatory laws and practices to the Supreme Court to challenge their validity.

Between them they’ve launched dozens of successful challenges to settlement legalisation laws, unequal government practices and the exclusion of Palestinians in the public sphere.
The only future for Israeli democracy is one where its Jewish and Arab citizens share power. Our funded project the Tzedek (‘Justice’) Centres overcomes ‘learned political hopelessness’ by bringing Jewish and Arab Israelis together at the local level.

By focusing on activism and realising profound change in shared communities they can not only bring about a more just future for themselves, but create a powerful model of Jewish-Arab partnership. NIF was a pioneer in this space and we continue to invest heavily to realise a better future.
Israel’s occupation of the Palestinian territories remains as deeply entrenched as ever. NIF works across a range of axes to protect Palestinians’ most basic rights and target the institutions which uphold the occupation itself.

Machsom (‘Checkpoint’) Watch ensures Palestinians can navigate Israel’s complex permit system, while Physicians for Human Rights provides vital medical care in the West Bank and Gaza. Yesh Din challenges the occupation’s immoral core by supporting Palestinians who are victims of violence from settlers and bringing cases to the High Court to stop the growth of settlements onto private Palestinian land.
Racism and discrimination can tear a society apart and without real efforts to address its structural factors it can never be fully addressed. With Netanyahu’s coalition partners openly espousing hatred towards Palestinians, women, the LGBTQ+ community and others, we’re scaffolding civil society as it prepares for a rocky period ahead.

Our funded projects – like the Racism Crisis Centre and the Israel Women’s Network – stand ready to take up cases and bring them to court, provide pyscho-social support to victims, and create deeper networks between organisations to maximise their collective impact.
