The Hebrew word tzedakah, commonly translated as charity, comes from the word tzedek, meaning justice. It reflects the Jewish values of right and wrong, social responsibility, and fairness.

Ilana & Ray Snyder: "The best way to realise the Zionist dream we were raised to love and support"

We grew up in homes in which contributing to Israel was integral to our lives. When we joined the NIF community in Australia, we found the natural extension of these commitments.

We’re now passionate about being part of a vibrant, progressive movement dedicated to making Israel more inclusive, just and democratic, a country in which all citizens are treated equally regardless of religion, ethnic origin, gender or sexual orientation.

As the often troubling political situation in Israel makes this work even more urgent, we know that NIF is the best way to realise the Zionist dream we were raised to love and support.

NIF Australia has launched a bequest campaign to help fund the partnership between Diaspora Jews and Israelis to promote democracy and social justice in Israel.

This is why we’ve added a codicil to our wills to include a bequest for NIF – our way of ensuring that NIF will continue working to make Israel the country the founders envisioned.

Remembering Andrew Casey z"l

Born in Hungary, the elder son of Holocaust survivors, Andrew Casey’s family came to Australia as refugees in the 1950s.

A journalist and long-time activist in the union movement, Andrew’s dedication to social justice, inspired by his Jewish values, was widely admired. Throughout his life he worked to connect Israelis and Palestinians through trade unions, support refugees and people seeking asylum, protest for land rights for First Nations peoples in Australia and build bridges between Jews, Muslims and Christians in Australia.

Andrew’s support for NIF through a significant legacy gift, which in part supports the advancement of democratic values in Israel, particularly through partnerships with Israel’s Arab citizens, ensures the values he embodied throughout his life continues to be felt today.

Already have a will? 

Leaving a bequest to NIF Australia can be as simple as adding a short legal amendment called a codicil. In some cases, all you need to do is email your suggested wording to your solicitor before signing the paperwork to confirm your wishes. Check with your solicitor to see if the update you need is suitable for a codicil.

You can pass these details on to your solicitor to assist in the process of including NIF in your estate plans:

I bequeath ________________ to New Israel Fund Australia (ABN 70 151 140 377) of 10/65 York St, Sydney NSW 2000 (or its successor) for purposes that it shall determine, and this bequest will be free from all duties. The receipt of this bequest by any authorised officer of New Israel Fund Australia shall form valid discharge to my executor.
